3rd Hugh Fletcher Memorial Regatta

September 8-10, 2006
Noroton Yacht Club, Darien, CT

Registration for the 3rd Hugh Fletcher Memorial Regatta took place on Friday, September 8 with 13 boats and skippers form all over North America.  Entrants came from far and near including: Victoria and Toronto, Canada; Newport Beach, California; Denver, Colorado; New Orleans, Louisiana; Woodstock, Connecticut and locally.  All were ready bright and early for the Saturday morning start.  The weather forecast was for a spectacular weekend with temperatures in the 80's and 70's.  Winds were forecast to be favorable in the 5 - 12 knot range.  The fleet was not disappointed with the weekend's weather.

At the skipper's meeting all were welcomed by US 2.4mR Class President, Peter Wilson, and given a brief review of the sailing instructions and safety factors.  A few questions were answered by Peter Galloway, PRO.   John Kruger welcomed the racers and spoke about the Hugh Fletcher Memorial regatta's meaning.  He announced that the Fletcher's had requested that a Sportsmanship Award be presented to one sailor.  That sailor would be selected by a ballot from each participant and the race committee.

Saturday's racing proved to be very exciting and competitive.  The scheduled five races were completed and the fleet returned to the docks at Noroton Yacht Club by about 4 PM.  The wind was in the 5-10 knot range from a basic southwestern direction.  The Sound was "lumpy" with a stiff current.  We were in a full moon tide of about 10 feet and the current was a little heavier than normal.  Nick Scandone (USA 120) and Bruce Millar (CAN 3) were head-t it out and were 1 point apart at the end of the day.

Sunday proved a different day and wind direction.  While sailing to the race course, the wind was stiff from the Northeast with swells and a heavy chop - and fairly "cold".  The race course was set and the boats were racing by 10 AM.  All three scheduled races were completed and the wind died down significantly and moved left during the racing.  The fleet again was in great competition with Nick Scandone in complete control.

We again sincerely thank our major sponsors, the Brewer Yacht Haven Marina and Crystal Rock Water along with Noroton Yacht Club. The support of these fine organizations help us continue our effort.
